Clive Broadbent leads Legionella Control
International’s specialist team in Australia and
brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this
important position. He is one of the world’s foremost
authorities on the control of Legionella bacteria and
Legionnaires' disease in air handling and water systems,
and a leading environmental hygiene specialist.
Mr Broadbent is a professional Mechanical Engineer
with over 40 years experience from the international
Legionella control, engineering services and environmental
hygiene sectors. He is a fellow of the Institution of
Engineers Australia, a fellow of the Australian Institute
of Refrigeration Air-conditioning and Heating, a member
of the American Society of Heating Refrigerating and
Air-Conditioning Engineers, a member of the International
Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate, a member
of the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand;
and an associate member of the UK’s Chartered
Institute of Building Services Engineers.
During his career Mr Broadbent has worked as a specialist
consultant and engineer advising at the highest levels
including 8 years as Chief Mechanical Engineer in the
Australian Federal Department of Housing and Construction
(the Department of Construction and Department of Works).
He has extensive experience in the development of Legionella
control measures for clients across Australia and internationally,
including experience in outbreak control at Melbourne
(1979), Adelaide (1985), Wollongong (1987), Parramatta
(1993) and Melbourne (2000). He is also author of well
over 100 peer-reviewed technical papers and publications
on the control of Legionella bacteria.
Highlights include:
Invited member of the World Health Organisation’s
(WHO) Infection Control Team for the SARS epidemic
in Beijing in 2003.
Awarded Member of the Order of Australia in 2000
for services to public health.
Winner of AIRAH’s highest award, the James
Harrison medal in 1992.
Author of AIRAH application manuals on water treatment
and indoor air quality.
Author of en-Health (NHMRC) monographs on Control
of Legionella, and Water quality for heated spa pools.
Chairman of AS/NZS 3666 committee and active member
of other standards-setting committees.
Author of the Standards Handbook 32 on microbial
control.
Author of 15 TAFE courses related to Legionella control,
cooling towers, and air-handling plant.
Author of the TAFE-NSW training book, “Clearing
the Air”.
Invited speaker to Legionella-related conferences
around Australia, and New Zealand, USA, Mexico, Hong
Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Belgium, the UK and Germany.
Winner of the AIRAH best paper award for 1985 and
1987.
