Legionella Training - Intermediate Course Level 2

Intermediate Legionella Training - This Legionella training course has been developed as an intermediate workshop based on the issues that surround Legionella and Legionnaires’ disease, the management and treatment of water systems, health and safety data management, current UK legislation, good practice procedures and a review of recent outbreaks. The course completes with a short test of competence and discussion forum.

Who Should Attend?

This course will be of most benefit to technical, engineering and maintenance staff, building, safety and facilities managers, company owners and directors with responsibility for health and safety, and who require a more detailed understanding of the issues surrounding Legionella risk management, water treatment regimes, health and safety data management, current legislation and good practice procedures.

Course Pre-Qualification Requirements

Prior to commencing this intermediate course delegates must have a good basic knowledge of the subject.

Course Content

    • Introduction.
    • HSE video “An Introduction to the Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems”. This excellent video presentation examines the two main risk systems associated with Legionella bacteria - cooling towers and hot and cold water systems. It explains how the risks from exposure to legionella should be managed and controlled, by risk assessment; treatment and control; monitoring; and cleaning and disinfection; and is accompanied by a series of audit checklists.
    • The chemistry of water - level 2. Focusing in more detail on the aspects of scale, corrosion, suspended solids and microbiological activity associated with water.
    • Water and its use in cooling towers and cooling systems – level 2.
    • Managing Legionella risks in cooling towers and cooling systems, including water treatment programmes and methodology.
    • Water and its use in hot and cold water systems – level 2.
    • Managing Legionella risks in hot and cold water systems, including water treatment programmes and methodology.
    • A review of the requirements for health and safety data management, record keeping and site log books, including electronic software systems.
    • A review of the Health and Safety Commissions Approved Code of Practice and Guidance (ACoP) L8 document “Legionnaires ‘Disease: Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems”. This guide has special legal status and gives practical advice on the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 (COSHH) and the relevant parts of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR).
    • Case studies and practical workshop – a review of selected case studies involving Legionella and Legionnaires’ disease, the use of worked examples to demonstrate risk management procedures, treatment programmes, remedial action etc.
    • Examination – short test of competence covering course content. Upon successful completion of the examination candidates will receive a Legionella Control “Certificate of Competence” Level 2.
    • Discussion and feedback including practical examples and experiences from the course tutors.

Delegates Will Learn:

    • About the relevant aspects of water chemistry associated with Legionella bacteria.
    • About cooling towers and other cooling systems, and how to manage and treat Legionella risks.
    • About hot and cold water systems, and how to manage and treat Legionella risks.
    • About the requirements for health and safety data management.
    • In more detail, about the latest approved code of practice (L8) and procedures to control Legionella bacteria risks.
    • About current UK legislation, your obligations and the importance of compliance.
    • About recent outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease, consequences of any failings, resulting action and lessons learned.
    • About practical examples from an experienced Legionella specialist.

Certification

Course delegates will receive a Legionella Control “Certificate of Competence” Level 2, following the successful completion of the course.

Course Duration

One day course, usually commencing 9.30am and completing 5.00pm.
